The committee is just bad this year. Really bad. There are too many politics at play, and it is becoming increasingly obvious they are giving in to them. I have had Cincinnati at 2 ever since Alabama lost, and I am standing by it. They should be 2 until they lose. And, unlike the committee, I’ll actually show my work. This week’s blog is going to be a pro Cincinnati rant. I simply cannot let the slander continue. Let’s dive into the Bearcats.
Cincinnati at 2 is not just their undefeated record, but how complete of a team they are. This isn’t the 2017 undefeated UCF team that just prayed their great offense would be enough to outscore the other team. The Bearcats have a complete team, with future NFL talent scattered around both the offense and defense. They also have a big win on the road against Notre Dame, which was one of the most impressive games I’ve seen from any team this season. The argument that the talent gap is too wide between them and the other top teams is just not true. Let’s take Ohio State, for example.
Ohio State’s biggest strength is their wide receivers. Cincinnati has one of the best cornerback duos in the entire country in Sauce Gardner and Coby Bryant. You’ll be seeing both of these guys on Sundays in the future. Add in two senior safeties, Ja’von Hicks and Bryan Cook, and the defensive backs for Cincy are some of the most experienced you can find in college football. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are the best pair of receivers in the nation, but the Bearcat’s secondary could definitely give them problems. And on the other side of the ball, Desmond Ridder can easily exploit the Buckeye defense. The only real dual-threat quarterback they have faced with Anthony Brown of Oregon, and he was able to rush 10 times for 65 yards. That, of course, was Ohio State’s only loss of the season. Desmond Ridder’s rushing stats have dwindled significantly this year, but that is largely due to the fact that he hasn’t had to put his body on the line too much. I’d imagine they would let him run wild against the Buckeyes in a potential matchup, and their young defense might have trouble keeping up. This is all hypothetical, of course, but it just goes to show that Cincinnati deserves more credit. They can play with the best of the best. They do deserve to be here. I genuinely think that a game between Ohio State and Cincinnati would at the very worst be decided by 10 points or less, and that Cincinnati would beat Oregon outright on a neutral field. It just doesn’t make sense to me how the Bearcats are undefeated but not in the top 4.
It’s time the committee either expanded the playoff or stopped playing politics. It’s pathetic. These kids work their asses off and win every game on their schedule, including a hard-fought win against a CFP top 10 team in Notre Dame, and at the end of the day they are told that still isn’t good enough. Its laughable that the committee wants to talk about strength of schedule when Alabama is playing 1-9 New Mexico State in Week 11. Give me a break. Maybe Cincinnati should wear Crimson jerseys, or perhaps throw a Tiger paw on their helmets. That might be the only way for them to get respect from this joke of a committee. If they win out and they aren’t in the top 4, the entire playoffs deserve an asterisk next to them. Do the rankings right or don’t do them at all.
